RedHat Enterprise Linux 8.4 emphasizes on Edge Computing

Software May 1, 2021

With the new release of RedHat Enterprise Linux just being released, they are going to emphasize edge computing deployments more. This means they will be adding additional container deployment and management capabilities that are geared more towards edge usage. The release will become available in the next few weeks.

Just announced this week, RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.4 will maintain standardization and control across Linux container images – this all begins with updates to the Podman container engine. This will allow systems administrators to manage containers across the cloud from a single point. They have also added support to create installation media for bare metal – which will help systems administrators maintain a foundation – to the Image Builder tool.

The RedHat Universal Base Image (UBI) is also getting some attention in the upgraded version. For the Edge, UBI now has a lightweight version for building redistributable cloud-native applications based on RHEL without the full kernel deployment necessary.

RHEL 8.4 also is positioned for greater flexibility for cloud applications, with a more “holistic” view of subscription deployment and reporting via Red Hat Insights Subscriptions and improved support for Red Hat Cloud Access.

RHEL serves as the foundation of the Red Hat Edge initiative, which is intended to extend the capabilities of the Red Hat hybrid cloud portfolio to the edge, supporting applications from telecommunications and transportation to enterprise devices and smart automobiles.

Some other key capabilities in RHEL 8.4 include expanded security, with the addition of an RHEL system role for crypto policies and network-bound disk encryption delivered as a container, and more automated system configuration and management through the Tracer Utility and RHEL Web Console updates.
